Implem­enting a data driven culture

City of Reykjavik


The city of Reykjavik, largest employer in Iceland with around 9000 members of staff, wished to implement a business intelligence platform across all divisions, with the aim to improve managers’ access to data and thereby increase efficiency of resources and fuel better, more informed decision making for 500 users. Capacent, with the Qlik Sense platform, was assigned the project.

The project was kicked off by setting a vision with senior management and 10 goals that have guided the implementation. Capacent worked closely with Reykjavik to understand the complex data architecture behind the city’s different systems. Capacent followed a collaborative approach through workshops and scoping sessions, building customized Qlik Sense reports and pulling together the appropriate data on the basis of managers’ exact information needs.


Capacent provided a reporting and analysis system that has brought crucial information, otherwise ill accessible, to the hands of managers, allowing them to keep a close eye on the state and progress of the operations they are responsible for. In addition to internal reporting, information about financial and operational factors are published on the web through the Qlik Sense platform.

The project has fulfilled the city’s strategic goals of transparency and openness towards the public by mitigating their data in a user-friendly and clear manner on open websites.

Capacent has worked closely with the City of Reykjavik to improve the management team‘s and the general public´s access to detailed information about the service, finances, and operations of the city. The project has exceeded expectations and delivered valuable benefits which help the city to be even more successful in providing excellent service to its inhabitants.
